Joanie's House is Burning

It’s another day of learning
A girl bursts into our room
Joanie’s house is burning

Our third-grade class is churning
Excitement peppers gloom
It’s another day of learning

Class continues, no adjourning
Our space, quiet as a tomb
Joanie’s house is burning

Eyes to Joanie keep returning
For my best friend, I am consumed
It’s another day of learning

This nightmare, so concerning
I long for normal to resume
Joanie’s house is burning

Today’s lessons overturning
Smoke seeps in, a dark perfume
It’s another day of learning
Joanie’s house is burning
