Awake in Guatemala

His daughter’s face haunts him.
She has his eyes,
shares a love of horses,
open country. He feels
dust blowing through empty rooms.

Death is the only peace
he will have, sons
murdered by guerrillas,
grandchildren and their mothers
gone to the States.

Grandson in Texas
dreams of castles, smiles in sleep.
Mirrors held up to his past reveal
ancestors with dark skin,
stories kept quiet.
