Wolf at the Door

Sheryl Slocum

Cold wind
            huffs at the gap
between window
            and casing.

Each winter’s rags
            have stuffed it wider.

My remaining blanket
            not enough
to stop air and
            keep my children warm,

I leave it down,
            glare
into the wolf’s
            gleaming eye.
