STUDENT POETRY CONTEST

2010 Judge: F.J. Bergman, Poynette

WFOP offers its annual poetry contest for students attending public, private or parochial schools, or who are home-schooled, in Wisconsin. Winners will be published in, and receive a copy of, the 2011 Wisconsin Poets' Calendar.

PRIZES in each division:

  • JUNIOR (grades 6–8): 1st $50, 2nd $30, 3rd $20; Honorable Mention
  • SENIOR (grades 9–12): 1st $50, 2nd $30, 3rd $20; Honorable Mention

RULES FOR SUBMISSION

  1. A student may enter one poem, which must be the student’s own work. Maximum length: 32 lines (including stanza breaks, but not including the title). Longer poems or plagiarized or multiple entries will be eliminated.
  2. E-mail submission: “WFOP student contest: (Last nameFirst name [e.g., SmithJoanna])” in subject line. Send poem as attachment: Word .doc ONLY, named “(Last nameFirst name [e.g., SmithJoanna]).doc”: In the body of the e-mail please include all info requested below in 3.a,b,c and 4.
  3. Postal submission: submit two copies of the poem, typed on white 8.5 x 11 inch paper in a plain 12-pt font. Do not add graphics or decorations. In addition, submit a page with the following info::
    a) Student's name, home mailing address, e-mail address if available, telephone number, and student's current grade in school.
    b) Teacher's name, e-mail address if available, school's name, school's complete mailing address, and school telephone number (home-schoolers: indicate home-school association, if applicable).
    c) Important! At the bottom, include the following statement: "This is my original work," (followed by the student's signature if a postal submission). The poem must be the student's original work to be considered for the contest.
    On both poem copies: POEM AND TITLE ONLY—no author's name or initials.
  4. A student’s previously-published poem, or their poem that has won an award is still eligible. Include publication or award information with identification information.
  5. NO POEMS WILL BE RETURNED. KEEP A COPY FOR YOUR OWN RECORDS. All poems will be recycled after the contest is over. Winners will be posted on the Contests page.
  6. DEADLINE: Entries must be e-mailed or postmarked by February 1, 2010.
