Over the Tree & Across the Water

Mary Wehner

She is just nine and wide-eyed
big plastic glasses outlining
the blue, blue eyes that dart
as she hums and composes
in her bedroom, in her closet,
in the vaulted kitchen while people
talk in low tones as though
she doesn’t know they are looking
over her shoulder assessing
her fingered tree, the perspective
she has concocted out of the blue-
yellow-green lines traveling through
sand and up and over the horizon
like the wavy green lake at Nana’s
house, the crooked shadow branches
dancing, reaching out to announce
one more day of play, one more day
of memory, the soft air swooping over
the dock, across the clover lawn,
the ground bees, the barking dog,
the high commotion of birds, everywhere
the scent of a busy summer’s end.
