Hold the Line

Jim Landwehr

It starts so innocently
“…please hold”
And before I can say
“I don’t want to”
I’m patched into
the middle of a
bad Kenny G solo
scratchy George Winston
piano melodies
or any of a number
of unnamed
middle of the road
jazz guitarists.
Some might use this
time to meditate
to soul search
or make grocery lists.
Not me.
I use it to
search for the minutes
of my life
I wasted
lost forever
somewhere
in the midst of
this phone call.
