600

Joyce M Latham

If I were in a boat
riding low in the water
with 600 other people
I would be afraid.

Staring deep into the sea
there is nothing to recognize,
no tangible offering to propitiate
gods or goddesses of hope.

Staring across the steel expanse
there is no horizon to reach,
no chance of salvation, only
hard slapping waves of longing.
