Submission tips and places to send your work, now curated by John L. Campbell • 17800A Caribou Pass • Brookfield, WI 53045-2141 • jcampbell52@wi.rr.com.

VERY SHORT SF POETRY
Dwarf Stars is the Science Fiction Poetry Association's yearly edited anthology of short-short poetry. We are trying to find the best speculative short poetry of 10 lines or less published in 2009. We define "speculative" as "science fiction, fantasy, horror, mythic or any combination or variation of the above." PLEASE DO NOT SEND POEMS THAT ARE NOT SPECULATIVE IN CONTENT.

1. Send us your 2009-published short poems of 10 lines or less (do not include stanza breaks in line count).
2. Send us recommendations of 2009 short poems of 10 lines or less that you've read and think are deserving along with publication information and the e-mail addresses of the poets, if you have them.
3. There is no limit to the number of poems you can send.
4. You do not need to be a member to send poems/recommendations.
5. AUGUST 31 DEADLINE.

Send these poems to us at dwarfstars@sfpoetry.com. Please include the words "Dwarf Stars Submission" in the title of the e-mail.

Marketing Requests Your Feedback.
As I explore literary publications, most of the ones I find are sponsored by colleges and universities. There are hundreds of them: e.g., Cream City Review, UW-Milwaukee. Madison Review, UW-Madison. Wisconsin Review, UW-Oshkosh. Southeast Review, Florida State. Crazyhorse, College of Charleston. Tin House, Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Mid-America Review, Central Missouri State. Barn Owl Review, Akron University, . . . etc., etc., I could go on for a dozen pages. All of these publications solicit poetry. For their guidelines go to their websites. Beware their reading times. Many read only between the first of September and the end of March for any given year. For a more complete list of literary magazine publications go to jefferybahr.com/Publications/PubFacts.asp. (NB: this list is seriously out of date and many publications are defunct—FJB) Click on Submission Resources. After you have that list, I can turn in my resignation as your Marketing Curator. The question is: what has been your experience submitting your poetry to these numerous academic backed publications? I suffer poetic paranoia, suspecting they favor the writing of their undergraduate protégés, spouses, and mfa graduates. And, why wouldn’t they? E-mail your opinion to John L. Campbell, jcampbell52@wi.rr.com.

The Chronicle Review, February 21, 2010, an article by David Alpaugh (too long to cover here) chronicle.com/article/ The-New-Math-of-Poetry/64249/ says “writing and performing poetry is the easiest way to satisfy the American itch for fifteen minutes of fame”, a cynical and factual synopsis of poetry and its future. Alpaugh predicts that this year over 100,000 poems will be published. In an ocean of mixed metaphors and a sea of salty similes Alpaugh makes one want to reach for a lifejacket.

Your local library will have a directory called The International Directory of Little Magazines and Small Presses with about 4000 book and magazine publishers of literary and contemporary items. Often, these publications are quarterly or bimonthly, everything from 10 pages stapled together to the most sophisticated perfect-bound paperbacks. This is a place to find a stable of publishers for your work. (I've found it to have a large proportion of obsolete info and defunct publications, as well as including few online listings—not worth buying, in my opinion. FJB)
Poets & Writers Magazine announced that they have added another 38 literary magazines, most of them publishing poetry, to their data base. Maybe you can get there before I do: pw.org/literary_magazines?apage=* That’s one whopping website!

Page 5: After 11 years of silence, Page 5 is back with #13, THE OL’ MAN by Gary Busha. From 1990 to 1998, Page 5, the little literary curiosity, was a strong and notable voice in the independent literary publishing scene. With small press vet (River Bottom, Noon at Night, Baseball, Floating, Nickle Times, Wolfsong and a variety of one-offs) R. Chris Halla at the wheel, Page 5 published John Judson, Dave Etter, William Kloefkorn, Mariann Ritzer, Justin Isherwood , Cathryn Cofell, Tom Montag and a number of others in a venue unique from anything else at the time. Page 5 is seeking submissions for #14 and beyond. Poetry, fiction, essays, other creative non-fiction and, especially, graphic fiction/poetry/memoir/non-fiction are being sought for future issues. Writers/Artists guidelines are simple: I have to like the work and it has to fit the format. Page 5 is published on a single 11 x 17 sheet resulting in four 5 ½ x 8 ½ pages and one 11 x 17 page, the latter being page 5. Anyone wishing to submit work to Page 5 must be familiar with its format. Sample copies are available for $3. No simultaneous nor electronic submissions. Submissions not accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope with postage sufficient to return the entire manuscript will neither be read nor returned. Page 5 will never charge a reading fee, but we insist that potential contributors see an issue or two prior to submitting. Page 5, R. Chris Halla, E&P, 1724 N Whitney Dr, Appleton, WI 54914.

The name change is prompted by a wish to express a connection between Western culture we would like to see and the survival of Israel. The work, Daniel Deronda, immensely influential … to adopt this title is to express hope of reinvoking some social and creative energy that Daniel Deronda incorporated and released.
